“You are dead to me.” It is cruel sentences like this in the work of Sarah Kane (1971-1999), an expression of her gloomy, depressed worldview, that burn themselves into the ear canals and continue to exist inside, because “The outside world is vastly overestimated.” But this gloom is constantly counteracted – by means of that insatiable longing that unites all of Kane’s characters, the longing for closeness, tenderness, love, security, which the young author embodies in powerful images and sentences of great literary significance Power to clothe understanding.
The four people in Gier, just called A, B, C and M, also struggle for encounters and togetherness with every utterance. But the injuries from the past that they carry with them make this fight for each other a great challenge – just as the fight against depression was for Sarah Kane.
Gier is a radical work of linguistic art that refuses psychological and realistic implementation. The artist Bella Angora (Vorarlberg/Vienna) is developing a performative production with video and music for Kane’s poetic, enigmatic piece.
